Probably my favourite portrait photo!

This shot was taken months ago when Sorcha and Matt brought their (very cute!) son, Jack, in for a photo shoot. You may remember Sorcha and Matt as I shot their wedding back in 2007.

Jack was an absolute star in the studio and I was so happy when I caught this moment. I can't remember what it was either Sorcha or Matt was doing that got him to look so surprised, but it doesn't matter - its just adorable!

Some more favourites

Last Friday I photographed the wedding of Samantha and Nigel at Barcelo Hinkley Island Hotel near Leicester. I know Sam from school so thats why I'm showing some of these photos before actually editing all the images.

These photos were done outside at night using one of Nigel's groomsmen as my light holder! He did a fantastic job and helped me get the effects I was after. Thank you Adrian.

A recent favourite

I am currently in the middle of editing Liz and Simon's wedding at Plas Isaf in Wales, and this is one of my favourites from the day.

Stay tuned for more photos by the end of the week.

Ideas - A bold wedding

Occasionally people ask me what I think would help towards great photographs and to be honest, there are hundreds of things that add to the photographs and also to the day itself. They say its all in the details, and it is.

If I could get married again I would probably do it completely differently. I had a very traditional wedding at the beginning of November and decided to have a dark warm colour that reflected the winter weather - purple. I had lots of different purples dotted about the place and in the decorations and it looked wonderful, but like I said, I'd do it completely differently if I could do it again!

What would I do differently? I would have a summer wedding, somewhere with guaranteed weather - my home town in Spain! - and I would go ultra bold on colours! Why stick with one or two colours? Why not have lots! Yellow, pink, orange, turquoise and green! You could have each bridesmaid in a different colour, your flowers a big bunch of bright colours and even the groomsmen in different coloured cravats. I've even heard of couples asking guests to come dressed to co-ordinate with the theme - generally its black and white, but why not specify that a bright colour should be worn? The bride could wear bright coloured shoes rather than the traditional ivory/white ones. I have one bride next week wearing striking purple shoes - I can't wait! I love photographing shoes and anything that makes a stand is good in my books.

Bright colours help photographs by making them stand out, its pure and simple. That's why I like photographing outside in gardens, the green makes everything else stand out. As a professional photographer I make sure that any bright and beautiful colours are made just as bright and beautiful in the finished photographs - most cameras desaturate the colours when a shot is taken, I get that back by tweaking the images on the PC.

Obviously there is nothing wrong at all with using one or two colours for your wedding theme, even if it is black and white - I am just reporting on what I think adds to photographs and how, if I could do it again, I would do it. My taste certainly doesn't match everyone's though! Each wedding is special and unique, no matter how ornately, colourfully or simple it is designed. The most important part for any good photograph is the emotion of the day - there are just some little things that people can do to make their photos stand out.

The Wedding of Lucy and Scott

I've known Lucy and Scott for a little while now as Scott is as mad as my husband and they compete together in Tough Guy - "the worlds safest most dangerous taste of mental physical pain endurance toughest." It is always nice to photograph someone you know, but at the same time it is just as nerve wracking as with every wedding, you have that responsiblity to get it just right.

They decided on the date of their wedding 8 weeks before the big day - a short amount of time for most planning a wedding! But, they pulled it off with spectacular results, the whole day was beautiful and even the sun came out and graced the day. The couple got married at Thornton Manor on the Wirral - one of my favourite venues. Not only is Thornton Manor a beautiful venue but the staff are great and will do almost anything to help make the day run as smoothly as possible.

This was the second wedding I have photographed at Thornton Manor, the first being the double wedding of sisters Alexandra and Maxine to their husbands Lee and Xavier.

The great day was finished off with a great evening, where Lucy's brother managed to pluck up enough courage to perform his 'golden thong dance' - an impression of the Party Boy Dance peformed by Steve-O in Jackass. It was a surprise to the couple and nearly all guests, which resulted in him being carried out by one of the guests before the guest realised it was Lucy's brother.

As it was such a fantastic day I am turning this wedding into a new sample album available to view by the middle of October.

Another movie clip - Love Actually

I've been going through some of my favourite wedding movie moments and this has to be one of the best in my opinion - The wedding scene in Love Actually, where on exiting the church the choir starts up and guests get up with instruments to play along. Every time I watch it, it brings a tear to my eye!
If one of my couples did this I could never thank them enough! Its such a lovely idea, very romantic (in my opinion) and would be the talking point for years between your friends.
I cannot unfortunately embedd the movie on this blog, but here is the link to it on YouTube.

Looking for something a bit different?

Every day I scan wedding websites, other photographers websites, YouTube, etc looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, and there is SO much out there! I'm going to start taking the time to link to all these ideas and hopefully someone will take inspiration, which is always good for me, your photographer, as anything a bit different adds that sparkle to your wedding day and album.

So, here's one someone alerted me to on YouTube - A bit of a different way to enter the church. Now, for this you would need a VERY relaxed officiant and a bridal party that don't mind being in the spotlight.

Its rather goofy, and I understand that its not to everyone's taste, I think a lot of people will find it tasteless and tacky, especially for the most important part of the day, but I'm sure it suited the couple down to the ground and it would have made for some fantastic photos! Personally, I wouldn't have had it at my wedding, I had the typical Pachabel's Canon D Major which still brings me to (happy) tears at any wedding I hear it at. I'm more of a classic girl, but that tiny outrageous little part of me (hidden well away most of the time) thinks this could have been such a giggle!

Enjoy!

The Wedding of Sally and Collin

The 16th May was the day Sally and Collin got married at St Paul's Church in Hooton and then surprised all their guests by arriving at their venue, Cheshire View, by helicopter. As far as the guests knew, Sally and Collin had left the church by car and were being taken off by myself for some 'romantic' photos in a nearby park, but instead we headed off to Vauxhall Motors Social Club where a helicopter was waiting. We did get a few photos with the chopper before they headed off for a tour round the local area, including flying over some famous people's houses (I think Micheal Owen's house was mentioned!). The couple even got the attention of the Chester Chronicle who sent out a photographer and were featured in that week's newspaper.

The Wedding of Alison & Richard

Today was the wedding of Alison and Richard. The wedding took place at Plemstall Church in Mickle Trafford and then we travelled the distance to Belle Epoque in Knutsford. Alison and Richard travelled in the luxury of a Bentley Argnage R, which was a pretty spectacular motor!

Belle Epoque is a lovely venue that was a joy to photograph, especially as we managed to get a day of sunshine. The outside patio was great for mingling guests and the little garden allowed us to get some formal shots with greenery. And the food - wow! The couple had something like a 7 course dinner which must have been amazing, but the lamb that I was served was out of this world and am looking forward to going back on a personal visit just for the food.

The results are in!

At midnight last night the voting ended on our canvas competition and the results have now been calculated.

As people following the competition will remember, it was stopped twice, the first time because people were reporting problems with voting, and the second time because of people round up votes through forums. Because of the second issue, the results were altered to take away the votes coming from the forums directly, and the previous results were added on. If anyone wants to see screenshots and figures to make sure, please email me directly.

So, at last, the results!

The winners of the canvas competion are Katie and Oliver who were married in December 2008.
Katie and Oliver will receive their winning image as a 24x16 box frame canvas. Congratulations you two!

The runners up were Emma and Lee:
and Penny and Mark.

The runners up will receive £25 worth of print credit towards images from their own wedding or any future photoshoots.

Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to all for entering.
